"But what happens to us who have intellects that are frustrated by being stopped at the media as a barrier to thought? Well, we either become activists and engage in a frenzy of projectsβ the whole of our intellectual energy compressed into making and doingβ or else we become violent in our frustration. After all, we are rational creatures, and our reason is being suppressed. We let off steam in irrational, convulsive ways. This is what the Protestants did, especially the sects, in various forms of βenthusiasmβ. This is, perhaps, what our charismatics are doing. This is the root cause of the violence of our present society, more an inchoate intellectual protest, I think, than rebellion against simple social injustice."
