šØ Our new research is now published in Public Health šØ
We used data from 20 European countries to show that (1) people in poverty are much more likely to feel lonely, and (2) loneliness and poverty predict higher levels of pain, fatigue, and low mood.

Social relationships seem to play an important role in influencing the health of people living in poverty. Findings like this one highlight the public health importance of policies that foster strong communities in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas.

Blocking humanitarian aid is a violation of the Geneva Convention, amounts to collective punishment, and is an age-old tactic of ethnic cleansing. Stop the killing.

Politicians often imply that people are poor because of ācultures of antisocial behaviourā. Money doesnāt fix anything, they say, it only enables more spending on vices.
But a natural experiment suggests the opposite; reducing poverty also reduces antisocial behaviour. [1/6]

The point is these changes happened within years, not generations (as the ācultures of antisocial behaviourā theory would suggest).
And they happened for families who were given the money needed to escape poverty and the stress it puts on people and their relationships [5/6].
