Thank you @AmuTelevision for ensuring Afghans have access to information about their own fellow citizens and the outside world can learn the reality of life under the Taliban:
What’s happening in Herat? - The governor, a hardliner, reportedly decided in last week’s government meeting to round up women in the city who do not fully cover their faces. - On Saturday, the PVPV arrested up to 35 women at three locations, including the Lilami area, a busy bazaar known for its second-hand clothing shops and carts, in downtown Herat. - The women were later released after their male family members were summoned and warned. - Today, a few dozen men and women from the Hazara neighborhood of Jebrail in western Herat took to the streets in protest. The Taliban opened fire on the protesters, reportedly killing a child and wounding several others. - There is talk of wider protests in the coming days, including after Friday prayers.

Dozens of men and women took to the streets of Herat City on Tuesday, protesting the recent detention of women by the Taliban. Women at the rally chanted: "Education, Work, Freedom." Witnesses said the Taliban responded to the protest with gunfire. Eyewitnesses said several demonstrators were wounded. The rally was held in the Jibrail area, northwest of Herat City. The Taliban have not commented on the incident so far.

Afghanistan: Reports of multiple women being arrested by the Taliban in Herat province for not adhering to their restrictive dress code are deeply alarming. It is a stark reminder of the continued crackdown on the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan. Every woman has the right to choose what to wear, move freely, participate in public life, and live without fear or intimidation. The Taliban de facto authorities must immediately disclose the whereabouts of those detained, guarantee their safe return, and end practices that target women for their choice of dress. The international community must urgently increase pressure on the Taliban to end cycle of systematic repression of women and girls.
UNAMA is concerned over multiple arrests and detentions of women in Herat #Afghanistan for alleged non-compliance with dress requirements, which raises serious human rights concerns.

Millions of Afghan girls banned from school. At the same time, #Taliban representatives are invited to Europe. That sends the wrong message – to Afghans fighting for their rights and to authoritarian regimes watching Europe. more @Euractiv euractiv.com/news/eu-condemn…

Ustad Farida Mahwash — the only Afghan woman to ever hold the title of Ustad (Master Musician) — speaking at her book signing on May 31, 2026. Her voice carried Afghan music to the world. Today, under the Taliban, a woman's voice is banned in public — which makes recordings like these, & her presence now, defiant. Also, my sweet father, Dr. Said Abdullah Kazem, who has known Ustad and her family since she was a child, reflects on her achievements, her hard work, and her legacy. Also, my amazing madar jan, Razia Kazem, holding Ustad's book. Together we rise!

Under the Islamic fundamentalist group’s rule, the economy has floundered, malnutrition has soared, and more than half a million jobs have been lost. Most women and girls over 12 have been banned from working and attending school. nbcnews.com/world/asia/cfr-t…

Today, May 20th, is Cuban Independence Day. Yet, the Cuban people are not free. We remember the cost of dictatorship as a federal grand jury indicts Raúl Castro for those killed in the 1996 shooting-down of two planes flown by the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue. For more than four decades, @NEDemocracy has remained consistent supporters of Cubans' democratic aspirations. Read more:
For over 40 years, NED has supported the people of Cuba in their pursuit of liberty. With our support, Cubans have been able to access uncensored news, document regime abuses, defend the right to worship, and push back against brutal repression. Our new impact report showcases the importance of our work assisting the Cuban people in advancing freedom under one of the world’s most dictatorial regimes. Nights like this matter. The incredible @counterpartint event on Afghanistan's art, culture, and women's rights, featuring artists and artisans, including many from @ArtLordsNet, left participants with a full heart and a sharper sense of purpose. Afghanistan doesn't need our pity. It needs our friendship. Our solidarity. Our genuine support. There's a difference, and it matters. The women of Afghanistan are not waiting to be saved. They are creating, resisting, and demanding to be seen. Our job is to stand with them. Not above them.

In the face of darkness, artists keep creating. These hands hold more than color. They carry resilience, memory, and the courage to transform pain into possibility. From the sharp wires of censorship, they grow roses of hope. From fractured worlds, they build patterns of belonging. And the butterflies remind us that no artist stands alone. From New York to everywhere, solidarity takes flight. At the @PENamerica’s World Voices Festival, Team @ArtLordsNet paint not just to be seen, but to stand with those who refuse to be silenced. #ArtLords #Artivism
