I couldn't visit Martin Down and not pay homage to my favourite british butterfly; the Marsh Fritillary. Although they were very active in the heat of the day and barely settled for longer than a few seconds.

I made it to Martin Down with seconds to spare yesterday afternoon, allowing just about enough time for this Common Rosefinch to rise to the top of the bush, sing and then fly across the Down and disappear. It is the first gettable one in Hampshire and would have proved popular.

Yesterday, I woke to a message from @MarkFra64259515 who had found this cracking adult White-winged Black Tern off Hill Head. It frequented the offshore feeding frenzy with a Black Tern for most of the morning at least. @HOSbirding

Nice to find an adult White Winged Black Tern off Hill Head this morning lingering around in the feeding flock. Might be an ok photo with a bit of editing 😂@HOSbirding @RareBirdAlertUK @BirdGuides

Unusual for the south coast this time of year and in this plumage, this Long-tailed Duck was extremely tame, preferring to feed in the shallow margins of the Meander Pool at Cuckmere Haven, East Sussex

Nice to spend Sunday morning in the company of this pukka male Eastern Subalpine Warbler that regularly sat up singing at Beachy Head.

A large crop on this Red-rumped Swallow at dusk yesterday along the Canal Path, at Titchfield. My second one here. @HOSbirding

I was just tucking into a roast dinner at my in-laws last night when this Red-rumped Swallow was found along the canal path at Titchfield. It stayed around long enough for 4 of us to twitch it before seemingly going to roost with the other hirundines.

The banks either side of the river are very high so the Spotted Sandpipers see you coming against the skyline way before you see them. This makes getting photos tricky but the 'spottier' individual is a little more tolerant.

My first visit to Yarner Wood didn't disappoint, despite being mid-afternoon by the time we got there from Cornwall. Redstart and Pied Flycatchers were plentiful, and we even lucked out with a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker during our short visit.

The long-staying 1st winter Bonaparte's Gull was initially distant on the Hayle Estuary before relocating to Ryan's Field, over the weekend.

I can barely remember the Minsmere Lesser Kestrel in 2010, so it felt like an appropriate time to visit this stunning male in Cornwall at the weekend with @DanielB06539998 & @sussexbirders

Kauai was hardwork, not least 'cos of the weather. The Elepaio was the only endemic songbird I saw; avian malaria is exceeding 5000ft elevation, above the highest peak on Kauai & the honeycreepers are barely clinging on. Hawaiian Coot, Green Turtle & Hawaiian Stilt from the coast

Pueo (Hawaiian subspecies of Short-eared Owl) are thought to have naturally established themselves when early Polynesians introduced rodents to the islands - they proved to be quite easy to find around agricultural fields on Hawaii Island.

A guided walk into Hakalau, a private reserve provides the only realistic opportunity of seeing the remaining native birds of Hawaii Island. 'Apapane is far the most numerous, whilst Oma'o, 'Akiapoa'au & Hawai'i Creeper require a little more effort.

A local Grasshopper Warbler is always good value. This one seemingly a passage bird and only present for one day.

A firm favourite and much wanted bird from Big Island (Hawaii Island) was the critically endangered Palila. At one point I had eight of these critically endangered honeycreepers in a bush high up a slope, right infront of me with more calling around me. Great birds!

This picture won't win any awards, but it was pleasing to pop out the office earlier to catch this pale phase Pomarine Skua passing Hill Head with @MarkFra64259515 with a nice flock of 9 Black Terns moments before.

Being up close and personal with Laysan Albatross was something I was looking forward to most in Hawaii...they didn't disappoint.

Oahu (Hawaii): highlights included Oahu Elepaio (no photo) & Oahu Amakihi from the ʻAiea Loop Trailhead. In the NW of the island we visited Ka'ena State Park where we stumbled upon this resting Hawaiian Monk Seal in a crevice, while a Wandering Tattler performed in the surf.
