As I keep seeing posts with supposed Wellington quotes about Napoleon, thought I'd post a little about the view you don't often see. Now, most of the praising ones can be traced and he did say (although context is key), but this fails to take into account his personal papers

The Waterloo allusions are mainly because Wellington by this point had read Napoleon's comments on St Helena, which criticised him, and was exceedingly peeved. He was very sensitive as to that battle, almost from the moment it ended.

Now, I can't possibly put it all on twitter due to the character limit. So, of course, it's time for my obligatory plug - go pre order to read all about it and save £5! 😅 pen-and-sword.co.uk/Wellingt…

10 June 1944. 642 men, women and children were murdered by the German Waffen SS in the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, France. The village was never rebuilt and featured at the opening episode of the classic ITV documentary series World at War.
