ALT Worker Update: Ontario's Minimum Wage Goes Up October 1, 2024. General minimum wage increases from $16.55 to $17.20 per hour. For students under 18 years of age it increases from $15.60 to $16.20. In 2014, workers fought for and won a law that tied the minimum wage to rising prices. This means that wages won't fall so far behind when the cost of living goes up. But this is not enough! That's why workers are fighting for at least $20 for everyone. Join the movement. Orange Shirt Day is a time to reflect on the cruel legacy of residential schools, a system supported by governmental and ecclesiastical authorities that sought to assimilate Indigenous children and eradicate their cultures.
Wearing orange today is one way we show our collective commitment to ensuring such tragedies are never repeated.
The statement "Every Child Matters" reaffirms a commitment to recognize the inherent value of every child and the resilience of Indigenous communities that continue to advocate for truth and justice.
