International peace and security needs effective multilateralism. Australia joined @AustriaUNGeneva and other Member States to explore options for revitalising the Conference on Disarmament. Australia wants a functional, efficient and forward-looking multilateral system.

Four weeks of in-depth discussions at the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty allowed for a thorough review of the three pillars of the NPT, and the affirmation of the vital role of the @iaeaorg in supporting the implementation of the Treaty. Despite the lack of a final outcome document, the NPT and IAEA continue to serve global peace and development by preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and enabling peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The significance of the NPT is not defined by the absence of an agreement on a Final Declaration. I applaud the tireless efforts of Ambassador @dohungviet of 🇻🇳. The IAEA will not stop for a single minute in advancing these objectives!

In this third week of the #NPTRevCon, as we work to build consensus on a final outcome, let us bring the best of diplomacy to bear. Pressure won’t help. Engagement will. Blaming won’t help. Understanding will. Threat won’t help. Flexibility will. Let’s get in done, together!

Without the #NPT, the world would be a more dangerous and unpredictable place. Our responsibility is clear. We must protect the Treaty, we must strengthen it, and we must ensure it continues to deliver in a very different world from the one in which it was negotiated.

During the 17th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Inter-Sessional Meeting on Non-Proliferation & Disarmament, @DrRobFloyd spoke about the importance of building confidence and trust in challenging times for the non-proliferation and disarmament architecture. He highlighted the contribution of the Intl. Monitoring System to global peace and security, and encouraged ARF members to continue their strong and vocal advocacy for the CTBT and its entry into force.

In Day 2 of the #ARF ISM on Non-Proliferation & Disarmament focus shifted to conventional arms control incl, developments on LAWS, cluster munitions, small arms & light weapons.
