The Urannah Dam project was cancelled by the Albanese Labor government in 2022. I wanted to see the final business case and environmental impact study (EIS) to see what they are hiding. The Commonwealth threw $22.65 million into the business case and approvals, then Bowen River Utilities withdrew the scheme from Queensland's environmental assessment processes in December 2022. When I asked why it was withdrawn, where the final business case is, and where the EIS is, the department agreed to provide it on notice. They claimed that because of "Commonwealth-state relations," the ownership of these taxpayer-funded documents rests with the state, though they "encourage" publication. I’ve requested copies if they have access to them. I asked if the bureaucrats are looking at the bigger picture regarding future water demand in the Burdekin Basin. There is massive potential in the Great Australian Infrastructure Project, which would see a major steel mill established at Collinsville, along with other mills in Central Queensland. These visionary projects will have a massive appetite for water. The department representative admitted he only knows about these vital industrial opportunities from reading the newspapers. They did note they are partnering with Queensland on a broader "Burdekin Regional Water Assessment" to look at basin-wide supply and demand, however it’s clear they are disconnected from real-world economic development. Whether it’s Paradise Dam or Urannah Dam, we are seeing the same pattern: endless assessments, massive cost escalations, secret reports and a total lack of urgency from state and federal governments to actually build the water infrastructure Australia.

Government revenue from the excise has declined from $16.3 billion in 2019-20 to a projected $3.6 billion in 2026-27 and a forecasted $2.1 billion in 2029-30. The ABS has also reported nicotine consumption in Australia (tobacco and vape products) has risen 40% in the past eight years – government policy is no longer effective in reducing consumption. One Nation will cut the tobacco excise by 50%, and freeze indexation until 30 June 2028 (with an option to review and extend). This will reduce the retail price of tobacco products by around 35% (about $17 off a pack of 20 cigarettes). The aim is to reduce the incentive for consumers to go to the black market. Analysis of the latest projects awarded in 19 new Federal Government renewables projects across the country show 16 foreign firms have won the tenders, with some if the largest managed by Chinese Communist Party-owned entities. Australian taxpayers will hand out billions to Chinese renewables giant Goldwind, whose two largest shareholders are state-owned companies Xinjiang Wind Power Co Ltd and China Three Gorges Renewables for the Baldon Wind Farm in the Riverina. Goldwind is overseen by former Chinese Communist Party National Congress delegate, Wu Gang. Currently, the land is used for sheep grazing and to house a 220kV power line cut through the centre of the site, but will soon be transformed to consist of 45 massive wind turbine generators managed by a CCP entity. Meanwhile, Spark Renewables, which will manage the NSW-based Dinawan Solar Hybrid and Wattle Creek Solar Hybrid projects, is owned by a group controlled by the Malaysian Government’s sovereign wealth fund, called Tenaga Nasional Berhad. The proposed Dinawan Solar Hybrid project is forecast to be a wind, solar and battery storage energy hub in the southwest Renewable Energy Zone including up to 200 wind turbines and an expansive 1.7 million solar modules across a 43,324 hectares investigation zone. The Wattle Creek Solar Hybrid proposal, in the NSW Southern Tablelands, also promises to provide “clean, reliable energy to power around 55,000 households per year” with 490,000 solar modules. An additional three projects – including the Banana Range Wind Farm in Queensland, Whyte Yarcowie Wind Farm in South Australia, and Willatook Wind Farm in Victoria – will be controlled by French Government utilities, EDF Group and Engie. The NSW-based Birriwa Solar project will be operated by Filipino-owned ACEN and The Ayala Group. The Bullawah Wind Farm will be operated by a Zurich-based investment firm controlling BayWa. Meanwhile, just three of the projects in the tender will be operated by Australian-owned companies, including Origin Energy’s Yanco Delta Wind Farm in NSW, ICA Partners’s Woolsthorpe Wind Farm in Victoria and WindLab’s Bungaban Wind Energy Project in Queensland.
