China teaches Twain heavily, particularly "Running for Governor" which oddly the US doesn't teach much, but it depicts the follies of popularity elections in the west.
I think if one author is indicative of a society, still known in the society and abroad, that counts.

For there to be an βAmerican Homerβ the answer would have to be immediately obvious to everyone, to such a degree that doubting it would immediately mark you as an eccentric. E.g the Italian Homer is Dante. So that this is even a question shows there isnβt one.
