The term 'situational mutism' is being used for two very different things — and some young people are getting the wrong support as a result.
We explain the difference between selective mutism and reactive mutism in our new position paper.

Unfortunately family life was very difficult for me. I didn't just mask at school, but I had to mask at home too.
I haven't really talked about family life before because it used to be too hard to talk about, but this changed recently.
Restraint doesn't just create hypervigilance, leading to more stress related behaviour in the future (and more restraint), it also causes trauma which it can take young people a significant amount of time and support to recovery from. No child deserves that
Spectrum Gaming's Self Directed Learning Community in Bury, Greater Manchester is opening in a few weeks!

We did it!
£1,609 has been raised which is incredible - thank you so much for the support.
I aimed for sub 2 hours and had an official time of 1:59:27 😎
This means we can do so much more to ensure autistic young people get the support they deserve.

Autistic young people regularly report receiving the wrong support when they experience difficulties with communication - which has motivated us to create this webinar on autism and selective mutism. The webinar is recorded: eventbrite.co.uk/e/101278220…
We are running a project called Barriers to Education - where we are rewriting the guidance for supporting young people when they struggle to attend school.
And I am running a half marathon to help make it possible:

"Go back to the @educationgovuk & rip up the behaviourist approach to education. It creates a world where neurodiverse children, those with anxiety, mental health and even the timid cannot survive." Absolutely agree @RachaelMaskell 👏 @teamsquarepeg@NotFineinSchool
I am writing an article on relational approaches for the Barriers to Education project and would love some help.
What are the strongest defenses of behaviourist approaches in schools that you can think of (so I can make sure I am sharing both sides)?
