For decades, Jody Watley has been a steadfast supporter of LGBTQ equality, Pride events, and HIV/AIDS awareness. Long before it was common for mainstream artists to do so, she used her platform to advocate for love, inclusion, and human dignity.
In the late 1980s and 1990s, she participated in the groundbreaking HIV/AIDS awareness project Red, Hot & Blue and released her bold and heartfelt single “Affection.” Despite being advised by some that acknowledging or supporting the LGBTQ community could hurt her career, she chose authenticity over fear.
As Jody reflected:
"I wasn't trying to be controversial. As always, my writing is from the heart, and I firmly believe everyone needs to feel love. If it cost me support, I could live with choices rooted in love and equality."
From performing at the massive Gay Games in Chicago to facing resistance from certain radio stations because of her outspoken support, she remained committed to her principles.
More than an iconic artist, Jody Watley is regarded by many as a true LGBTQ ally and Gay Icon—an honor earned through decades of advocacy, visibility, and unwavering support. Her invitation to perform at one of the nation's largest Pride events is a testament to a legacy built on music, authenticity, love, and equality.
