Somalis in the marketplace of Marka, 1889. One of the three major ports of the Banaadir coast, alongside Muqdisho (Mogadishu) and Baraawe (Brava). To my knowledge, the earliest account of the city and its name dates to around the 1100s CE.

The banquet hall in King Sahle Sellase's palace in Abyssinia during the 19th century. The shields on the walls always strikingly reminded me of traditional Somali shields. Google "Gaashaan shield" to see what I mean.

Las Qoray, my father’s birthplace — young girl's funeral (19th c). Bitten by a snake while drawing water, she died within hours. At dawn, her body was carried on a stretcher by rotating bearers so every man could pay homage, as women burned incense and chanted “La ilaha illallah”

Two Shaigiya fighters, c. 1835. The Shaigiya are Sudanese Arabs historically living from Korti (~230 km north of Khartoum) to the 4th Cataract (Meroe). Though Arabic-speaking today, 19th-century sources show they still spoke Nobiin alongside Arabic.

Wedding of a Somali Prince of Luuq, 1895. A town aptly named after the fact that it sits on a bend of the Jubba river. Luuq means "alley" in Somali.
