Who is an Entrepreneur? An entrepreneur is someone who buys at known prices and sells at unknown ones. That definition is from 1734. Most of what has replaced it, is thinner. Richard Cantillon, an Irish-born banker who made his fortune shorting the Mississippi Bubble while investors across France and Britain were ruined, left a manuscript that circulated privately for decades before being published twenty-one years before The Wealth of Nations. His central insight was a division of economic actors into two classes, separated not by wealth or status but by income certainty. On one side: landowners, wage earners, those on salary. On the other: those who buy at known prices and sell at unknown ones. He called the second group entrepreneurs. The word already existed in French; Cantillon gave it a meaning. Uncertainty-bearers. The ones who absorb the risk that no one else will take. The definition covers more ground than the startup mythology has conditioned us to expect. The farmer who plants before knowing the harvest price. The merchant who buys inventory before knowing demand. The doctor who builds a practice without knowing how many patients will come. The consultant who takes on a retainer before knowing whether the engagement will yield results. The startup founder, yes, but also the independent contractor, the market trader, the sole practitioner of any kind. What distinguishes the entrepreneur, in Cantillon's frame, is not ambition or innovation or disruption. It is the willingness to operate under genuine income uncertainty. The discipline kept the word; the meaning thinned. Three centuries on, most organizations contain both classes under the same roof. The distinction still holds. It just stopped getting named.
