It's amazing how much the mids can affect the overall feeling of the low end... boosting the sub won't help! Try cutting the sub completely on the master and listen to reference tracks - they still sound massive. Radical idea: mix w/o the sub, then add the sub at the end!

Never really cared about mono compatibility before, but now starting to realize that mono-compatible sounds have more presence and cut through the mix much better… now I know why my mixes sound like crap 😂

Also realized that if you take one channel of a reverb tail (say, left) and expand it in a mono-compatible way, the reverb sits much better in the mix, even though it’s less natural…

Trying a new approach for basslines: build everything without a kick first, then find (or tweak) a kick that fits. Seems to be easier than doing it the other way around…

Produced and mixed an entire track on laptop speakers… was quite surprised how well it translates when I listened to it in headphones for the first time. M1 MBP speakers are impressive!
