The college basketball referee who seems to ref every game on TV. How does he do it?

Why did I create this account? I am fascinated by the pressure (in-game travel) demands on the top college basketball refs -- Roger Ayers is the poster child for this w/ his crazy schedule. And I feel like this is an under-covered aspect of college basketball, so here we are.

Roger Ayers Ref Tracker retweeted
Roger Ayers is one of college basketball's top referees. He spoke for the first time at length about his controversial encounter with Dan Hurley last March. He is eager to put the controversy behind him. My story for Hoops HQ @hhqsports hoopshq.com/seth-davis/roger…

Let’s go! Congrats on the recognition! Maybe I should setup the Rainey Ref Tracker account on here for when you’re working bigtime games in a few years 😁

MSG is the site of next season’s East Regional, so they get an Elite 8 practice game in the same site that they hope to play at in late March. (Just like they did with the Michigan game in DC last season. Although the Elite 8 vs UConn didn’t work out for them.)
Duke announces a multi-year agreement with Amazon, including three high-profile nonconference games this season: Nov. 25 vs. UConn in Las Vegas Dec. 21 vs. Michigan in MSG Feb. 20 vs. Gonzaga in Detroit (the site of this season’s Final Four)

This is very cool
The Stars and Sabres lined up after the game to congratulate linesman Steve Barton for working his final NHL game 🤝

The quick, real time challenge system in baseball creates these funny moments
Dan Iassogna: "This is another catcher's challenge." "They have 0 challenges left." You can almost hear Dan Iassogna's eyeroll.

Say what you want about Hurley, but he typically gives thoughtful answers like this
Dan Hurley on the officiating 👀 “It’s hard to ref that game. We both played so hard… If I could have those three guys ref every game the rest of my career, I would sleep well at night.”

😂 😂
“Gene any thoughts on the call” Gene: “You could call this or not call this, up in the air” Call made Gene: “Clear obviously right call by the officials” “Thanks Gene”

Yep. Some teams actually foul more than other teams. Referees don’t have to “call it even”.
Good time to remind people online that some teams foul more than others and one team having more fouls called doesn’t make it a “rigged” game Especially when one team is sub 250 in foul rate and the other is like 45th

Maybe, just maybe, UConn is fouling more and that’s why they’ve been called for more fouls?
Replying to @ryanhammer09
People are VERY mad about the refs Yes there’s a FT discrepancy & Michigan scoring so much from there but there’s a reason for that lol. I don’t think refs are a huge issue but maybe I’m wrong 🤷‍♂️

Feels like you may be a little biased, sir
The refs have taken control of this game. Fouls are 11 to 4? Ridiculous. Only reason Michigan is in this game.

Look at @dhurley15 out here cheating on Roger Ayers with @CoachDustyMay

No NIT or CBC for Roger, so his season is officially over at 114 games worked. Will have some final season stats for Roger sometime this week. Enjoy the title game tomorrow, everyone!

Do you think Roger watches these games raging that he could be doing a better job than the guys out there?
These Final Four officials making C.B. Bucknor look good.

Wait, Roger didn’t make the Final Four??!! After all the chatter about him this week, I thought he was one of the selected referees. (This is a poor attempt at a joke, folks)
Officiating assignments for #MFinalFour weekend have been determined: Illinois vs UConn: Ron Groover, Paul Szelc, Marques Pettigrew, Greg Nixon (Alternate) Michigan vs Arizona: Doug Sirmons, Keith Kimble, Doug Shows, Lee Cassell (Alternate) National Championship: James Breeding, Jeff Anderson, Kipp Kissinger, Alternate (TBD)

If this is my moment in 4 years of running this account to be wrong, I’ll take it. (I’ll say this again — I prefer 64. That’s perfection. But going to 76 is a nothingburger. My biggest compliant to 76 is it makes bracket challenges weird/confusing, especially for kids.)

It’s ok to be wrong. It happens to all of us eventually. This is your moment.
