Robbo was a hero for all the kids who watched him from the Trent End with their Dads. This one included. Thank you for the memories. RIP

A statement from John Robertson’s family. It is with immense pain and sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, dad and grandad.  John passed away peacefully on Christmas morning with his wife and family by his side,  after a long illness.  Our only comfort in our grief is that his struggles are now over, and he is reunited with daughter Jessica. “Robbo” was treasured by many as a footballing hero but to us he was just John and dad, the family man…kind, loving, witty, fun and loyal. Although our hearts are breaking, we will always be grateful for the years we were privileged to share with him and the amazing memories we made. We will miss him every day and love him always. John leaves wife Sharyl, daughter Liz and sons Andrew and Mark, as well as granddaughters Jess and Phoebe.

Lucy Connolly pleaded guilty. She admitted she was a criminal. What is the alternative to a randomly chosen jury, if someone accused of a crime says they have a defence that they are entitled to be put in a fair trial? Does Mr Philp support the ancient right to trial by jury ?
It is astonishing that Labour councillor Ricky Jones, who was caught on video calling for throats to be slit, is let off scot free - whereas Lucy Connolly got 31 months prison for posting something no worse. The development of two tier justice is becoming increasingly alarming. It cannot have been a question of uncertain evidence as Jones was on video clearly calling for violence. The government must come forward with plans to ensure justice is handed out equally, regardless of the background or views of the perpetrator - but as far as I can see this Labour government seems to be quite happy with two tier justice.

The law does not say this. It says that jail is the starting point *before the judge deducts for any mitigation and guilty plea*. But more importantly this was not a Crown Court sentence so Tom Tugendhat’s complaint cannot be acted on.

This is simply wrong from Rishi Sunak. As @charlie_taylor6's report on HMP Lewes found, high-risk prisoners are being released early under the scheme. This included a prisoner who was deemed a risk specifically to children, with a history of stalking, domestic abuse and being subject to a restraining order: hmiprisons.justiceinspectora…

Keir Starmer goes in on the prisons crisis as lower level defendants are released on police bail without hearings after jails ran out of space Some prisoners will be freed up to 70 days early after ministers to ease overcrowding crisis Rishi Sunak says that no-one who poses a risk to public safety will be released

A few years ago, Westminster magistrates court downgraded the press room from a large area (with a view) to a small, windowless room. We complained, but adjusted Now they are taking away our chairs. We are down to two, including one inexplicably bolted to the floor.
