The Mull of Galloway is the southernmost point in Scotland. This outcrop is of the Carghidown Formation, which consists of calcareous greywacke with interbedded mudstones. This marine sedimentary rock was deposited around 444–433 million years ago during the Silurian Period.

"Researchers conclude that in the Northwest Pacific, the total hadal area is four times larger than that of trenches alone – roughly equivalent to the size of Alaska, Texas and Montana combined."
Scientists from @UniofNewcastle in collaboration with @BritGeoSurvey have discovered that the deepest parts of our oceans- regions between 6,000 - 11,000M depth - could be far larger than previously thought. ow.ly/4y7y50EhLfk

Am Buachaille on #Staffa. A pile of #basalt columns can only be seen fully at low tide. The bending columns are the result of #lava cooling at different rates over 59 million years ago! #Scotland #VisitScotland #historical #Highlands #Hebrides 📷 Peter Marston

#Staffa (staff-ay; island of pillars) was named by the #Vikings, who were astonished to see an island held up by huge, regular sticks or staves. They believed the regular #hexagonal columns could not have been formed by natural forces, and must be the work of #gods or #giants.😀

Published today – Prof Alan MacDonald, who is based at the Lyell, led this research. It provides insight into #Africa’s distribution of groundwater storage and recharge. It could help to protect against #climatechange and sustain groundwater pumping for #drinkingwater.
An international team led by @BGSGroundwater has published maps quantifying long-term average groundwater recharge in Africa using ground-based measurements. Read more ➡ ow.ly/V5JJ50DBCys
