How to reach out to populations not represented on your board? Change your language, build relationships, invite ppl who use your services (nothing about us without us), understand differences and challenges faced by diverse populations (child care, language barriers, 1/2

... cultural barriers, transportation, accessibility), and last but not least, remove those barriers. Once you recognize the barriers you will be better equipped to remove them.
Talking about power and privilege --> here is a great point - Invite people who use your services - 'nothing about us without us'

2 down 1 to go! Tonight is day 3 of Board Leadership Week in Lethbridge. We will be learning about 'Board Diversity - Creating a Bigger Impact With the Community you Serve' facilitated by Tymmarah Mackie. There are still spaces left if you can attend -->boardleadershiplethbridge.ca…
Another way to recognize your sponsors is to send them your annual report, and make sure their names are in there. Hand delivering the report is nice touch (but in covid times an email or link might have to do) #BLL2021 #Lethbridge #yql

So you got a sponsor, how do you keep them? Recognition, recognition, recognition. Mention lots, thank you letters, handwritten card, just keep recognizing them! Some orgs even throw parties for their donors #BLL2021 #lethbridge #yql
Poll time - 100% of attendees know you can reject a sponsorship/donation. It might be hard, but sometimes it is the right call.

If a potential donor/sponsor says no, is it appropriate to question why? Well the answer is 'it depends' ... to those who attended last night that might sound familiar 😉

...and... what to do if they say NO? Still need to remain professional, and know that it is NOT personal, it is business, and there could be many reasons they said no (including that they themselves are tight on funds) #BLL2021 #Lethbridge #YQL
Ok here is where it gets scary... a potential donor/sponsor just said YES!!! Now what? First of all, remain professional, and maintain communication. Be sure to follow up with them regularly. #BLL2021 #lethbridge #yql
We just had a poll to ask how people feel about cold calling, and not surprising that the majority of people have some nerves about cold calling. Chris has some great tips to make it easier. #BLL2021 #Lethbridge #yql

Plan your questions in advance. You won't ask the same questions to everyone you ask. BUT don't follow a script! They will be able to tell.

Definitely practice cold calling with anyone you can beforehand. Your board members, family....
A great tip from an attendee: Utilize your board members....we do a role play to help before we start cold calls or sponsor presentations so the person doing the calls feels more comfortable and confident
Don't overwhelm your potential sponsor or donor in your first meeting. You need to get to know each other first. Don't attempt make the 'deal' on the first call.
Some great discussion at #BLL2021 tonight, and now we are getting back to learning about cold calling. I bet it is not as scary as it sounds :-) #Lethbridge #yql
