2026 Sports in Kansas 5A Boys🏀 Player of the Year: Kelan Gruver, Bonner Springs
Kelan Gruver led Bonner Springs to a 5A state championship, delivering one of the biggest moments of the season with a go-ahead three-pointer against two-time defending state champion Kapaun Mt. Carmel in the title game, securing the program’s first state title since 1984.
The 6’3 senior averaged 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game while shooting over 45 percent from three, showcasing one of the most efficient and complete offensive seasons in Kansas.
Gruver finished his career with nearly 1,500 points while earning multiple all-league and all-state honors, cementing himself as one of the top players in the state. He was also a Sports in Kansas Top 5 All-Classes selection this season.
“This season was the most fun I’ve ever had,” Gruver said. “Not just because we were successful, but because the guys were a joy to be around on and off the court. I’ll cherish those memories for the rest of my life. I also want to recognize all my teammates and coaches I’ve played with over the years. None of this would have been possible without them.”
Kelan played for his father, Drew Gruver, the 2026 Sports in Kansas All-Classes Coach of the Year, making the championship run even more special for the program.
In a loaded 5A field, Gruver consistently delivered in big moments, combining shooting, playmaking and leadership to help guide Bonner Springs to its first state title since 1984.
One of the top guards in Kansas, Gruver leaves behind a legacy of winning, clutch performances and high-level production.
