Beneath the rubble of a collapsed house, a seven-year-old girl named Miriam was found protecting her little brother, Ilaaf, with her own body. Trapped under a heavy concrete slab, the two children spent more than 36 hours waiting for rescuers to reach them.
Despite the fear, the cold, and the extreme conditions, Miriam never stopped watching over her younger brother. In a video that later went viral, her voice can be heard speaking to one of the rescuers: “Get me out of here, and I’ll do anything for you.” Simple words, spoken by a child, that touched hearts around the world.
After a delicate and complex rescue operation, Miriam and Ilaaf were finally pulled alive from the rubble. Shortly afterward, they were able to reunite with their parents and another sibling, who had also been trapped beneath the debris for more than 24 hours before being rescued.
Their story emerged amid one of the worst disasters in recent years. The earthquake that devastated the region along the border between Turkey and Syria claimed tens of thousands of lives, leaving entire communities destroyed and thousands of people homeless.
In the midst of so much suffering, Miriam’s act became a symbol of love, courage, and the instinct to protect. A little girl who, in the most terrifying moment of her life, thought first of her younger brother’s safety before her own.
Their survival represents a small light of hope in an immense tragedy and reminds us of the extraordinary strength and love that can exist even in the youngest hearts. ❤️
