If pens are so inherently unthreatening why are they universally heavily regulated among prison populations globally? What was the impetus for the restrictions placed on their use?

I absolutely guarantee your students do not hold that position in the way you think they do. Sure, they acknowledge past people had different ethical standards, but only that those people hadn’t yet progressed to what they perceive as the self evidently *correct* standard.

Wanye's annoying conceit is that he's the liberal whisperer. He can read the minds of liberals and describe their strange ideas to his followers!
But his liberals are straw men created to feed the vanity of his audience that they are smart, and liberals are dumb.

You could find some liberals who fit wanye's caricature of all liberals, but most liberals (like the students I teach) agree that people in the past had a different understanding of morality. This is just nutpicking.
There are fair generalizations you can make (and criticize) about liberals (and progressives, and conservatives), but that's not the game wanye's playing.

Liberal egalitarianism is functionally a religion in postmodern America. These kids do not believe both pro and anti slavery positions exist on the same plane as equally arbitrary ethical constructs. Liberal opposition to slavery is beyond rational calculation.

“Moral credit” is beside the point. Lineage and the actions taken throughout it is an objective chain of causality that exists independently of assigned value. The point is that you and the circumstances you inhabit are necessarily the only possible result of those actions.
Chuds will get upset at this, demanding just deserts for the virtues of their lineage, but if you mention reparations suddenly it’s all “sins of the father”
If you want moral credit for all the assets of your ancestors, then you must first be encumbered with all of their debts

There’s argument for the lack of a coherent “European” race prior to steppe migrations, but that is absolutely not the case right now. ALL modern European populations are descended from the same 3 ancient populations in varying degrees with little outside admixture. It’s a race.
