Just published in Notes and Records, a paper about Newton's beer mug! Read about the wooden flagon that Newton is on record as giving to his Trinity College, Cambridge chamber-fellow, John Wickins, which survives intact: royalsocietypublishing.org/d… #notesandrecords #twitterhistorians

Many thanks for the recommendation! And really nice to see it being read in a suitable setting... It's still in print: the publisher's in the US (upittpress.org/books/9780822…) but the usual retailers over here should be able to get it easily enough.

Who was the luckiest Victorian ever? It would be hard to beat Alfred Barnard, who toured 162 distilleries between 1885-87 and wrote a book on whisky distilleries of GB and Ireland. He then went on to tour 110 breweries (1889-91) and published a four-volume book on breweries.

Replying to @davidquain
Such a sad loss. His history of the @IBDHQ is an absolutely brilliant book and anyone interested in the history of British brewing should read it.

In fifty-odd years of life, I've done a lot of things, only recently focused squarely on beer. Yet in those decades, from adolescence to a moment in the bowels of Greene King, no matter what I've done, beer has never been far out of frame. beervanablog.com/beervana/20…

I've just discovered that Amber Patrick, whose book I mentioned earlier in the day, will be doing a short talk in Thetford, on 11th June, looking at East Anglian Malthouses. Just got my ticket - £5 🙂 artfund.org/explore/events/2…
