In the last few days, three Lower Mainland children under the age of five have either been killed or been placed in imminent danger of death or serious bodily harm. These are called “critical incidents” and weigh heavy on first responders.

As I work my last shift with @VancouverPD before retirement, I find I keep reflecting on one thing: the people I’ve worked with along the way. The partners I’ve had, the teams I’ve been on, the incidents we’ve been involved in.

I firmly believe another secret to this (happy, healthy, ready) is to leave while you still love it. And I still love it. It’s been my honour to have served as a police officer for nearly 30 years, and to finish it as a Duty Officer is to have come full circle.

Finally, as I’m about to hang my uniform up for the last time, I want to thank all of you. Your continued support means more than you could ever know. It’s another bond, you see. One that I will be forever grateful for. 🫶🏻 Inspector 1746 Sandra Glendinning 10-7

I arrested a guy the other week and caught several officers playing rock/paper/scissors to see who was going to help with the report. “Are you playing what I think you’re playing?” Silent pause… “Yup!” They just rolled with it and kept playing. 😂 #VPD #team

To our fallen comrade, may all those whose lives you touched find light in these darkest of moments. Rest easy now, officer. We have the watch from here. @VancouverPD
We sadly mourn the sudden off-duty death of a beloved VPD officer. They will remain forever in our hearts.

Headed to a gun call when I got passed by a speeding motorist. What the… With no time for a #heresyourcoupon moment, I pulled in front and flipped on the red & blues. It worked. They went from warp speed to legal. If only it were always so easy. #VPD #RoadSafety

As 2023 comes to a close, I am grateful for many things: my family, friends, and a job I enjoy. I’m healthy, happy, and have a life that I love. What a great way to end the year. Wishing you a Happy New Year, and see you all in 2024! #VPD #HappyNewYear

Congratulations to my dear friend and old partner, Sgt. 1880 Jana McGuinness, as she works her last shift with the @VancouverPD tonight. Jana - it’s been my honour to have worked with you. Congratulations on your retirement! #VPD #patrol #partners #oneofthegoodones

I was in a parkade recovering a car when a golf cart with a flashing yellow light came rolling slowly up the ramp and around the corner toward me. Inside, the serious security guard was a septuagenarian, dapper in his red coat and styled white hair. #VPD #TheySeeMeRollin

The last few hours have been really busy, and I suspect someone said the Q word. From a serious assault up north, to a successful K9 track down south, plus the lid coming off Granville St., then a violent domestic out east...night shift never disappoints. Some other calls:

A missing youth was found. Multiple motor vehicle incidents from the rain. A momentary game of chicken with a car going the wrong way. Some guy wanting to rock at seven o'clock with a belly full of beer. But it was Friday, not Saturday, and it wasn't a night for fighting.

It was a good night, and not it's time to head in and let day shift take over. I hope you've enjoyed this foray into what it's like to police in Vancouver. Thanks for coming along. Until next time... #VPDRideAlong #JoinVPD #patrol #frontline

Did another spin through the Granville Entertainment District and the lid was still on it, so I headed back to HQ for a quick break. But then, another warble, so I’m headed out again. #VPDRideAlong

A short time ago, there were several callers reporting “shots fired” and the call was warbled. After an extensive area search, additional witnesses were located who confirmed the “shots” were actually fireworks. 👍🏻 #VPDRIdeAlong

Each district has their own channel and dispatcher. When there’s a major call, the chief dispatcher (CD) sends out an alert tone, called a “warble”, and broadcasts the call across all channels. This way, all units are aware of the unfolding incident. #VPDRideAlong

The rain is keeping people inside, and the domestic disturbances are starting to come in. There are several in progress across the city. With heightened emotion and often involving violence, domestics are some of the sketchiest calls for officers to attend. #VPDRideAlong

Suspect popped out of the underground and tried to make a run for it. He was challenged by K9 and he surrendered. One in custody. Well done, team! #VPDRideAlong @VPDCanine
