The figure summarizes the results and hypotheses generated in this study. INS is spatially associated to interpersonal interaction, observation, and attention processes on a behavioral level, to attention-related brain networks and the DMN on the brain network level, to the TPJ and the IFG on a brain-regional level, and to layer IV/V neuronal circuits and to GABAergic neurotransmission on molecular and cell-levels. Additionally, INS-related gene expression was found to start in sensory brain areas postnatally.
