In my opinion, if you are not earning ₦5 million per month, you should not be paying income tax because your contribution is relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of government revenue. Jeff Bezos said in an interview a few weeks ago that the taxes paid by the average citizen are relatively insignificant, and I agree. The Dangote Group alone paid more in taxes than twice the total amount paid by Nigeria’s entire working class in the last two years. My view is that the focus should be on creating more billionaires and large businesses so that the government can generate more tax revenue from them. Instead of taxing lower-income earners, those deductions could be converted into compulsory savings that individuals can only access to start a business, invest in education, buy a home, or cover a medical emergency.” The goal should be to create more wealth creators, not to squeeze more revenue out of people who are still struggling to build wealth themselves.
Can you truly have a democratic government without a debate about taxation? What do we want to do about taxes? Are we unanimous that every taxable person must pay? — Babatunde Raji Fashola, Former Lagos State Governor, calling for a broader conversation on taxation. #June12

ADC PICKS RT. HON. CHIBUIKE ROTIMI AMAECHI AS ATIKU’S RUNNING MATE. The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), after extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives of all geopolitical zones, is proud to announce that the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been selected as the Vice-Presidential Candidate of our great party for the 2027 Presidential Election. This recommendation follows the successful conclusion of the ADC Presidential Primaries, in which Rt. Hon. Amaechi emerged as the runner-up, earning widespread support from party members across the federation and demonstrating his enduring appeal as one of Nigeria's most experienced and respected political leaders. The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development. Rt. Hon. Amaechi brings to this ticket one of the most comprehensive public service records in contemporary Nigerian politics. His experience spans all major pillars of democratic governance. He served with distinction as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, making him one of the longest-serving legislative leaders in Nigeria's Fourth Republic. He subsequently served two terms as Governor of Rivers State, where he oversaw significant investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and public sector reforms. At the national level, he served as Minister of Transportation, leading some of the most ambitious transportation and rail modernization initiatives in Nigeria's history. Few political leaders in Nigeria today possess such extensive and balanced experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government. This depth of experience will be invaluable in supporting the next ADC administration from day one. Beyond his impressive credentials, Rt. Hon. Amaechi strengthens the ticket strategically. His political influence across the South-South and wider Southern Nigeria, his reputation as a reform-minded administrator, and his proven ability to build coalitions across political, ethnic, and regional lines make him uniquely positioned to complement the candidacy of Atiku Abubakar. Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket—one that bridges regions, generations, and political traditions. Their combined experience in governance, economic management, public administration, party organization, and nation-building offers Nigerians a credible and compelling alternative capable of restoring confidence in government and accelerating national development. At a time when millions of Nigerians are demanding competent leadership, economic revival, job creation, security, and national unity, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket sends a clear message: the ADC is prepared to govern, prepared to unite the nation, and prepared to deliver results. The leadership of the ADC is confident that this partnership will energize our growing coalition, inspire hope among Nigerians, and provide the leadership necessary to build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Federal Republic of Nigeria. The ADC therefore calls on all party members, coalition partners, civil society organizations, youth groups, women leaders, and Nigerians of goodwill to join us as we embark on this historic journey to renew our nation and secure a better future for generations to come. Signed: Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi National Publicity Secretary African Democratic Congress (ADC)

Christianity is taking over the world. Thank you @realDonaldTrump
Besonderer Moment! #wm #dfbteam

I remember when I had just gotten into tech. It was so difficult that I wanted to quit. I was in a keke napep on my way home, confiding in a friend about how I wanted to give up and go back to what I had been doing before. The keke rider pulled over and gave us one of the most impactful speeches I have ever received in my life. He told us how he used to be a fraudster and how he once enjoyed the high life in Abuja and Kaduna, but life happened and he ended up becoming a keke rider. That conversation was one of the reasons I continued my tech journey. A few months ago, I ran into one of the biggest “Yahoo boys” from my childhood. The first time he bought a car, he bought five on the same day. Today, he hangs around the streets begging for money. I could mention his name, but there is no need to kick a man when he is down. When I see young people chasing shortcuts, I remember stories like these. Those old, poor men you see today once had dreams too. Many of them enjoyed life in their youth and probably thought their good times would last forever. Life has a way of catching up with everyone. Continue wasting your life if you want to, but don’t assume there will be no consequences tomorrow.”

Yesterday was the posthumous birthday of my friend. She passed away 11 years ago, and we were the same age. Whenever I think about her, it reminds me how precious life is and puts many things into perspective.

Time catches up with everyone
Here is the lady from the Joy Soap advert in the 1980s and 90s, radiant, admired, and unforgettable, yet now aged and transformed, looking completely different. Her story whispers a timeless truth: beauty fades, applause dies, and nothing lasts forever, but the seeds of kindness, character, and legacy are what truly endure.

Simple. If they don’t sign then they know what is coming
The response to this should be “We don’t care. Sign the deal or don’t. If the latter, you should get your bunkers ready.”

But nobody is talking about how they were attacked first
I strongly condemn today's Israeli strikes on Beirut. The strikes took place despite the ceasefire & at a time when the US & Iran are expected to reach an agreement that will pave the way to a peaceful resolution of this conflict. This conflict is having a devastating impact on the world's economy. I urge all parties to show maximum restraint at this crucial moment & I strongly hope for a successful outcome of the ongoing efforts by the US & Iran.

Nigeria has a large diaspora population that is already familiar with and eager for Nigerian products. If the government invested just $20 million in export-oriented production targeted at Nigerians abroad, the returns over the next few years could be significant. The focus should be on low-hanging fruits: foodstuffs, processed agricultural products, and other commodities where Nigeria already has a competitive advantage. Once the diaspora market is established, foreign consumers would naturally follow. We need to become a nation that produces and sells, not one that relies primarily on taxing people who are already struggling. Taxes alone will not create prosperity. We need to start thinking differently.
