Introducing my substack, Behind the Wire, with my take on Reform UK vs Nottingham Post (and democracy). Behind the Wire is about fighting for journalism, and journalists, in the face of the many dire threats and pressures the industry is under today. open.substack.com/pub/frombe…
“Why don’t you just get out of journalism?”
It’s a question I’m hearing these days, but not yet asking myself. Even in the darkest hours.
No l'm not ready to give up yet.
But it is getting harder and harder.
Some personal notes on my Substack. Link below.

Josh Simons led a plot to investigate and then trash the reputations of @thetimes journalists including @Gabriel_Pogrund, for having the audacity to look into undeclared donations to Labour Together. Andy Burnham's going to reward Simons with a top job. frombehindthewire.substack.c…

"The many false allegations and smears made against me and others, and reported as fact without evidence, have been surprising and disappointing"
Donald Trump has an agenda: to crush, suppress, bankrupt, bully, and litigate free journalism into the ground. And he has allies.

ALT Nottingham journalist and author Frances Ryan is Britain’s leading writer and activist for disabled people. She has spent years calling out reckless government policies and social ignorance towards disability, and been a beacon for people living with disabilities. This year she released a new book describing the daily differences of living with a disability. We caught up with her for a chat…
How has the anti-racist alt-left media covered the Manchester synagogue attack? Socialist Worker, which cried "rejoice" on October 7th, hasn't at all. Neither has Novara Media. Neither has Stop The War Coalition. They haven't even mentioned it, among numerous posts since.
Excellent news not just for @nottslive but for all newspapers and publishers, setting a very important precedent: if Reform tries to block the press in future they can and will be challenged legally. Well done @nat_fahy and Reach for sticking to the guns.

Genuinely hard to tell what’s parody and what isn’t, given the self-parody nature of Corbynism, but assuming this isn’t, it didn’t take long for the same old feeble 2015-2019 self-delusions about ‘the establishment’ and the media to kick in.
Reform UK just filibustered a motion submitted by @broxtoweindys to a full Notts County Council meeting condemning the party's ban of the Nottingham Post and LDRs, defending freedom of the press. It's almost as if they fear scrutiny from journalists and, now, fellow councillors.
As laughably predictable as this all is, Corbyn's leadership of Labour was almost as chaotic and dysfunctional, and was just as implausible to the electorate. What a shame it took two election defeats for the Corbynites to accept reality. What a double gift for the Tories it was.
Hell is a culture that produces an A.I. generated deep fake YouTube Christopher Hitchens which 'skewers' modern public figures, offers Hitchens 'takes' on the Epstein files, the shooting of Charlie Kirk, and JK Rowling, and is cheered by bots and bot-like humans in the comments.
