2/3 The article tests reputational explanations for the voluntary account-giving of EU agencies in a quantitative manner. We find both media salience and principal neglect to be related to accountability-seeking behaviour.

3/3 In addition to testing reputational explanations for voluntary accountability, the article also makes an important contribution in that it introduces a new original index of the independence of EU agencies that was developed (by Thijs) using Bayesian Factor Analysis.

Account-Holding Intensity in the EU Accountability Landscape 📖 @BenjaminTida Thijs De Boer @VUamsterdam offer a novel concept of account-holding intensity for analysing the behaviour of account-holders in the accountability landscape of EU agencies bit.ly/3uFs00U

2
We define account-holding intensity as both the frequency and the diligence of account-holding, proposing this as a framework for assessing both the quantity and the quality of account-holding processes. 3/4

In general, the results of our study constitute good news for those concerned with EU accountability deficits. In particular, the high diligence observed should temper concerns of accountability deficits that an analysis solely focused on frequency might have caused. 4/4
