The offshore phase of @ECORD_IODP #Exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReefs is ending. Are almost in port 🎉🥳. I'll miss everyone, especially my wonderful hardworking nightshift comrades (see action pic). Next step: work together to figure out what all these incredible samples mean🤔😊.

Just changed locations from oldest to youngest reef terrace and hit basalt! And got the contact capturing reef initiation! 🥳 Well preserved Porites, coralline algae, microbialite. Guessing it is from MIS3? #HawaiianDrownedReefs @ECORD_IODP #Exp389

Just finished coring the oldest reefs of @ECORD_IODP #Exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReef from over 1 km water depth. Branching coral framework with coralline algae and microbiolite. Truly unique information about sea level and subtropical climate from ~450,000 years ago!

Let's talk about yesterday. 11th hour site addition b/c we need deglacial data from windward side. Back-reef gravel/sand, deteriorating hole conditions, forced to terminate. Ugh. But..as we open last cores, we spot massive corals. 🥳🎉 on #Exp389 @ECORD_IODP

I have a new favorite site! Hilo cores are an incredible continuous section of what are likely several sea level & climate cycles during MIS 5! (pic is branching coral framework, coralline algae crust and microbiolite) Loving these #HawaiianDrownedReefs on @ECORD_IODP #Exp389.

Got a beautiful, very exciting, complex sequence of in situ coral framework at Kohala. Large variety of corals, long sections of massive Porites (small section of one in pic). We're in Hilo region, >30 meters into MIS 6-7 reef. Hooray! @ECORD_IODP #Exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReef

Just landed on the 400 m reef. Pic shows where we are in space and time.... Kohala, Big Island, coring the MIS 6-7 reef. @ECORD_IODP #Exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReefs

Hit the basalt basement underlying the MIS10-11 reef! First complete top-to-bottom coral reef package recovered on #IODP #Exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReefs. Pic is of fellow night shift scientists, Marc & Pankaj, ready/waiting for the next core to describe and photograph on deck.

On #IODP #Exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReefs, MIS6-7 'reef' turned out to be lots of sediment (and I love mud!), with tantalizing pieces of reef coral at bottom. Plan to go back in the next few days to see what is deeper. Quiet core deck while we're waiting for next bunch of cores.

At Kohala, the windward side of the Big Island, and just finished coring the top of reef package from MIS10-11. First look at samples shows facies changes expected from reef drowning at the termination of MIS10. Exciting! Hopping over to the MIS6-7 reef now. Stay tuned....

Evelyn Fox Keller (1936 - 2023) I read her book in 1985 and it changed the way I looked at science and at myself as a scientist. In a NYT 2005 interview she said "I retain the hope and even the belief that at least some forms of confusion can actually be cleared up."

Quick drilling at site M100 (a happy milestone for #ESO and #IODP), and we got...... black rock! Fortunately for all of the scientists like me who are not quite sure how to think about basalt, we have Kenna Rubin @kenhrubin onboard who can decipher its messages.

Mid-cruise portcall. So happy to see my brother who lives in Hawai'i. Lunch and then Halo Halo, yummy. Just a few hours on land was a great way to reset and ready for the second half of #IODP #Exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReefs. We're off to core the MIS 10-11 reef!

On transit to Honolulu for mid-expedition port call, resupply, people moving on and off, etc. Reflecting on the first month of #IODP #Exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReefs: despite difficulties, we got some great core and are ready for more please! 🙏🙏

Can't help but post yet another sunrise picture :-) On land, I'm normally sleeping during sunrise, so I can't get over the novelty of seeing the sky turning from night to day every morning on #IODP #exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReefs

Coring at MIS1-5 reef right now, beautiful cores of corals, coralline algae crusts and microbiolites tell a complicated history of sea level change, climate change and reef growth on #IODP #exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReefs! Picture is from: expedition389.wordpress.com/…

Sunrise today is different on #IODP #Exp389 because…….we have moved closer to the Big Island, sampling the youngest of the #HawaiianDrownedReefs hoping for expanded sections of MIS1-5.

Co-chief scientist Christina Ravelo looks at beautiful white rock protruding from cores that arrived on the ship's deck just now at 3:00 a.m., on IODP #exp389 #HawaiianDrownedReefs. We're excited to get to work after the contractor cuts them and @ECORD_IODP personnel curates them
