The character of Frank Costello in The Departed is loosely based on Boston gangster Whitey Bulger. Scorsese gave Nicholson freedom to shape him. The actor wanted Costello to be “frightening but charismatic,” pushing for more madness and deviance.

The ending of The Rise of Skywalker deserves a Nobel Prize for making an entire trilogy feel improvised.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) wasn’t a box office success when it was released, yet it ended up becoming one of the most influential cult films of the 2010s. Few movies have aged this well.

I don’t think Disclosure Day is top-tier Spielberg, but some of the criticism feels excessive. Even a “minor” Spielberg film is usually more interesting than most blockbusters released in a given year.

I grew up with Daniel Craig, but GoldenEye (1995) remains one of those Bond films I can throw on at any time. There’s a charm and confidence to Brosnan’s performance that never gets old.

One reason the Bond franchise has survived for over 60 years is that it has never been afraid to evolve. The goal was never to find another Sean Connery, Roger Moore or Daniel Craig. The goal was always to find the next actor capable of redefining Bond for a new generation. x.com/007/status/19693710666…

The older I get, the more I appreciate the costume design in Casino (1995). Most gangster films focus on the violence and the power. Scorsese understood that the clothes were part of the story too.

I genuinely don’t think Daniel Craig’s Bond era ever topped Casino Royale (2006). Skyfall may be the more visually stunning film, but Casino Royale remains the one I keep coming back to. For me, it’s still the best-written Bond film ever made.

Hollywood keeps talking about the death of movie stars. Meanwhile Timothée Chalamet is quietly building one of the strongest careers we’ve seen from a young actor in decades.

Before filming Skyfall (2012) Daniel Craig underwent a brutal training regime for six months. He wanted Bond to look physically exhausted and aged to match the script's theme of a veteran agent who is past his prime in a modern world.

Christopher Lee called The Wicker Man (1973) the best film of his entire career and worked for free, accepting zero salary because he believed in the script so deeply that he campaigned for its production over a full year.

One of my favorite Friends facts is that Jennifer Aniston almost left the show before Season 1 even aired because she was already committed to another TV series. It’s hard to imagine Friends becoming the same phenomenon without Rachel Green.

The Empire Strikes Back (1980) is still the gold standard for sequels in my book. Instead of simply repeating what worked in the first film, it expanded the universe, deepened the characters and delivered one of the greatest twists in cinema history.

Heath Ledger spent months perfecting the Joker’s posture in The Dark Knight (2008). He wanted his movements to be unpredictable and "ape-like" so the audience would never know if he was about to attack or simply laugh.

Tom Cruise was so adamant about Val Kilmer’s return in Top Gun: Maverick that he refused to make the sequel without him. Cruise told producers, "We have to have Val, we have to have Iceman," insisting their real-life bond was essential for the story.

Jason Statham was the original choice for Peaky Blinders (2013). Cillian Murphy was seen as too physically small compared to Statham. Murphy saved his casting by texting the creator these simple words: "Remember, I'm an actor."

No matter how many times I revisit Shutter Island (2010) this scene still gives me chills. One line of dialogue turns a psychological thriller into a tragedy.

If Disclosure Day underperforms at the box office, it will become much harder for Spielberg to secure massive budgets in the future. We need to support this film.

In Interstellar (2014), Matthew McConaughey’s "Cooper" wears a Carhartt jacket. Nolan wanted the hero to look like an American "everyman," a farmer first and a pilot second.
