I guess the UK's Marine Protected Areas are a fiction, since bottom trawlers are allowed to hoover up the seabed. theguardian.com/environment/…

The prime minister of Poland warns European leaders what will happen if they fail to help Ukraine
Europe must understand that if it loses Ukraine it will never be the same again. It will no longer be Europe. Rather it will be a defeated, humiliated and pathetic version of its former self. I want a strong and resolute Europe.

“Western Europeans pooh-poohed and patronized us for 30 years,” said Radosław Sikorski, a former Polish foreign minister. “For years [they] were patronizing us about our attitude: ‘Oh, you know, you over-nervous, over-sensitive Central Europeans are prejudiced against Russia.'”

A historic night at Versailles. After five hours of heated discussions EU leaders said yes to Ukrainian eurointegration. The process started. Now it is up to us and Ukrainians to accomplish it fast. Heroic Ukrainian nation deserves to know that they are welcome in EU.

Thank you for flying 🇺🇦 flag, but the @cityoflondon urgently needs to set up a sanctions taskforce. Why has this not happened yet? Nothing on Committee agendas.
We stand with Ukraine 🇺🇦 More than a hundred City workers and residents gathered at Guildhall Yard this morning to show their support for the Ukrainian people. Click here to find out more: news.cityoflondon.gov.uk/cit…

Finally some action towards banning bee-killing pesticides. #SaveOurBees
I’ve just opened the debate on banning bee-killing pesticides in Parliament. These pesticides paralyse, confuse and kill bees. I want a strong ban and an updated strategy from Government to restore bee populations. I bloody love bees. It’s time to #savethebees ❤️🐝

There’s an old hill farm saying: ‘under bracken, there’s gold’. It refers to the deeper soils beneath bracken – soils that could be the forest floors of old woodlands. Soils that could one day again be woodland. Under bracken, there’s rainforest… lostrainforestsofbritain.org…

5/n What’s more, many of these swathes of bracken lie next to our best remnants of old-growth temperate rainforest – like Wistman’s Wood, Black Tor Beare, Piles Copse and the Atlantic oakwoods of Borrowdale. Why not let these woods spread into the bracken areas?

4/n Letting trees & scrub naturally regenerate over these vast bracken stands = 'the right tree in the right place' Land covered by bracken isn’t productive farmland – it’s inedible to most livestock; bracken monoculture lacks biodiversity; & it tends not to grow on deep peat

3/n I’ve been sent new draft maps of bracken cover in two of England’s national parks – both of them within our ‘rainforest zone’. I’ve found that Dartmoor has 14,370 acres of bracken (6% of the park) & the Lake District has at least 35,000 acres of bracken (also 6% of the park)

2/n Ecologist Ian Rotherham has pioneered the study of ‘ghost woods’ – places where trees have gone but other indicator species still grow: like wood sorrel, bluebells and bracken Many old-growth temperate rainforests, like Black Tor Beare on Dartmoor, are surrounded by bracken:

Bracken is thought by some to be an indicator of former woodland. New maps I've been passed reveal that bracken covers over 50,000 acres of Dartmoor & the Lake District. Can we use bracken maps as a guide for regenerating temperate rainforest? 🧵1/n lostrainforestsofbritain.org…
