There’s an old hill farm saying: ‘under bracken, there’s gold’. It refers to the deeper soils beneath bracken – soils that could be the forest floors of old woodlands. Soils that could one day again be woodland.

5/n What’s more, many of these swathes of bracken lie next to our best remnants of old-growth temperate rainforest – like Wistman’s Wood, Black Tor Beare, Piles Copse and the Atlantic oakwoods of Borrowdale.
Why not let these woods spread into the bracken areas?

3/n I’ve been sent new draft maps of bracken cover in two of England’s national parks – both of them within our ‘rainforest zone’.
I’ve found that Dartmoor has 14,370 acres of bracken (6% of the park) & the Lake District has at least 35,000 acres of bracken (also 6% of the park)
