Today, we got the green light to begin opening sites in the #OptiBreech 1 study. Babies continue to present breech despite the pandemic, so we continue work to keep them and the women who give birth to them as safe as possible. optibreech.uk

Was there ever a point that it was grand being a woman in Ireland? Even in the 20th century - no contraception, no divorce, no proper reproductive healthcare. Mother and baby homes. Symphysiotomy. Thalidomide. Marital rape. Ban on working after marriage. Am I missing anything?

18 institutions out of over 100 chosen. Despite several appeals, St. Patrick's Guild, the biggest adoption agency, which also arranged US and illegal adoptions, was excluded. Illegal adoption was excluded. 500 people testified out of over 100k #motherandbabyhomes @AdoptionStories

In 1998 I used to visit a teenage friend from home who’d been placed in a catholic home for pregnant girls so the family wouldn’t have to deal with the shame. I was her only visitor. I ended up being with her for the birth. 1988. Not 1940. Not 1930. 1988.

One thing that should be kept in mind about the Mother and Baby home report is that it only covered a sample of 18 institutions.
There were many more in Ireland.
There were thousands more victims who weren’t included in the report and will likely never have their stories told.
