The discriminatory act, targeting Israel has reached a major U.S. institution, as a Brooklyn food cooperative voted to boycott Israeli products - a decision that mirrors the growing antisemitism evident in simultaneous attacks on Jewish businesses across New York.
The Park Slope Food Coop, a prestigious Brooklyn institution founded in 1973, approved a boycott of Israeli products with 67% support after changing its bylaws to lower the voting threshold - a tactic critics say undermined democratic process. The vote came amid physical confrontations, harsh accusations of antisemitism including one member's statement that "Jewish supremacism is a problem," and Jewish members expressing fear for their personal safety.
Simultaneously, in Queens, an Israeli-owned kosher bagel shop was vandalized by a masked man in what police are investigating as a hate crime. Security footage shows the attacker spending five minutes smashing planters, overturning tables and throwing metal barriers at the storefront.
"This targeted attack on a Jewish business is part of a troubling pattern of unchecked harassment against the Jewish community," said Moshe Safran, president of the Jewish Teachers Association.
