I've been meditating a lot about this sort of thing because I've felt very unhappy playing strive for a while now and I've realized many things. I want to share the things I've learned, so anyone else that struggles can maybe find something useful for them in this retrospective.
i keep thinking i should switch characters, ky in 2.0 feels awful because he feels pretty janky with many interactions never going the way you'd reasonably expect them to or combos being very inconsistent, like you have to expect the worst all the time and it's just not fun

Long story short, play video game, press buttons and don't think on it too hard. Fighting games are unfair and weird, but you're probably still pressing buttons for a reason!(10/10)

It's true he feels awful to pilot sometimes, but I still play him for a reason. And I don't feel "at home" with others. I can look at jank as "oh that's a classic" and move on instead of treating them as an ever increasing pile of evidence that my character is atrocious. (9/10)

Sometimes, your character gets changed in ways you don't like, and that can really ruin the fun. But sometimes, it's really just as simple as taking a game too seriously or thinking too much about if a win is deserved. The lesson I've learned at the end of the day is that (8/10)

If I truly hated Ky, I would've genuinely dropped him already. But no other character feels like "home", and even though I've had these complaints I've kept playing him. Because even though the bad stands out, parts of him are still things I love playing out. (7/10)

Just because I feel like I'm working hard doesn't mean I deserve to have a round. Just because my character might be worse than the other person's doesn't mean I deserve to win. And this mentality is what has been damaging my fun. (6/10)

Fighting games are ALWAYS unfair in some way, that's the truth. Sometimes in fun ways. This is what I've struggled to accept and has brought me frustration, but now I'm finally beginning to realize that some things really are just out of my control. (5/10)

"I put in so much effort and this is what I get?" is what I basically think sometimes. But I end up forgetting that, usually, these games don't care that much about how much effort you've put in. They usually only care about what happens in the match. (4/10)

So when I'm working hard to do something like open up a player that has top-class defense with very interactable offense, I get that good hit and then the combo drops in some freaky way, and then I get hit and die, most of the time I look at it like "I just got scammed." (3/10)

It somehow wasn't clear to me in the moment but part of the issue is in how I look at the game. Ky isn't weak, but he's janky, and because of how he's designed you often have to work a bit harder to achieve things some people do easily. This is a very intentional flaw. (2/10)
