N/um Tchai, from the album Bon Odori
In Ju/’hoansi, one of the best-documented San groups, the N/um Tchai ceremonial dance translates to Tchai which means gathering to dance and sing and N/um refers to the supernatural potency or “medicine” energy that healers activate.
During the dance, women clap and sing power songs (some named after rain, giraffe, honey, etc.), while men dance in a circle around a fire until they enter a trance.
Shamans then “travel” to the spirit world to capture or control a mythical rain animal (often an eland-like creature or “rain-bull”), whose blood/milk becomes rain. This is vividly shown in ancient San rock art across southern Africa.
