Very interesting. Thanks to the PMPF Pirates had disappeared but now they have come back completely out of nowhere. I see the interests of both Turkey and Mogadishu in this because this way they can claim that Puntland is not capable of protecting its own waters.

In an oil exploitation deal, the cost of recovery is 10-15% for the oil-producing country according to international standards. South Somalia managed to secure a 5% royalty, without environmental protection.

Glad the US is bilaterally engaging with Somalia's federal member states like Puntland rather than routing through Mogadishu. Trying to create a strong central government in Somalia is a failed experiment. The most plausible way the US can protect its interests there is by working with regional partners and those federal member states with a baseline of competence and legitimacy.

⚡️UPDATE: Puntland presidency says it has held its first discussions with the United States on minerals and oil resources in its territory, adding that U.S. companies are expected to invest in exploration and production of natural resources in the region, according to an official statement.
Puntland’s president received a U.S. delegation led by Deputy Ambassador Justin Davis, acting U.S. ambassador to Somalia, alongside AFRICOM officials including Col. Shane Jones, to discuss Somalia’s security, politics, development and the failed talks, focusing on the transition and Puntland’s role.

🇸🇴🇹🇷 Somalia is in the final stages of securing a deal with Turkey to establish a naval military base in Laasqoray North-East State. Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi and Minister of Ports & Maritime Transport Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur are both in Turkey right now closing it out.
When completed this will be the largest naval military base ever built on the African continent. Laasqoray sits on the Gulf of Aden, one of the most strategically critical waterways on the planet.
