Why does every show and movie portray it this way?
Popular culture has shaped the modern image of Vikings far more than archaeology has. Much of what people picture today, massive warriors draped in furs, wearing ornate armor and horned helmets, comes from 19th-century artists, Romantic nationalism, and costume designers for Richard Wagner's operas rather than from evidence found in Viking Age graves.
Archaeological discoveries show that most Vikings dressed much like other northern Europeans of their time. Clothing was typically made of wool and linen, often dyed in bright colors. Men wore tunics, trousers, cloaks, and leather shoes, while both men and women paid considerable attention to grooming. Combs are among the most common Viking artifacts recovered by archaeologists.
Most Vikings were not professional warriors. They were farmers, fishermen, traders, craftsmen, and merchants who only took up arms when necessary. Even among raiders, expensive equipment such as chainmail and swords was owned primarily by wealthier individuals.
The horned Viking helmet is largely a modern myth. No complete Viking battle helmet with horns has ever been found. The only nearly complete Viking helmet discovered in Scandinavia, found at Gjermundbu in Norway, had no horns and was designed purely for protection in combat.
