New experiment out in JASA showing that trilled [r] is matched to a rough/jagged shape in 28 languages. Languages with trilled [r] as primary variant show a dampened effect. We discuss implications for the role of acoustics vis-a-vis articulation in sound symbolism.

... can also be triggered via gesture, and that this has a real effect on perceivers. We are currently in the process of following up on these experiments by testing different quantifiers, including looking how semantic factors such as monotonicity interact with gesture. ⬇️
