Just sighted on MSNBC. Harvey Dunn’s “Something for Supper” (Collection of South Dakota Art Museum) evidently on loan in the DC office of Sen. Mike Rounds. Tip O’Neill also had a Harvey Dunn (1884 – 1952) of “Paul Revere’s Ride” in his Capitol office when Speaker of the House.

Here is the Harvey Dunn that used to be on the wall of Tip O’Neill’s Capitol Hill office in the 1980s.

Dec. 23, 1924: “The Last Laugh,” one of the crowning achievements of German expressionist cinema, is released. The film directed by F.W. Murnau about the tragic fall of a proud hotel doorman will revolutionize filmmaking with camera movements and visual storytelling. 1/7

So… @TomDohertyfilm Was Adolf Loos’ [#BOTD 1870] name intentionally mispronounced by Dianne Wiest in Woody Allen’s “Hannah and her Sisters” … or was this just sloppy pseudo-intellectual name-dropping, as well as Brandeis snark? @MidCenturyCinem

I found that scene irritating and distracting in ‘86. The error in the pronunciation suggested that April had also mispronounced Loos’ name — in a moment we didn’t see — and that David, the NYC architect, also may have been ignorant. (Why I’m no fun to go to the movies with.)

11/25/1963: At JFK’s funeral Jackie Kennedy curtsies to Prince Philip. In 1961 she was told by WH Chief of Protocol Angier Biddle Duke there is no curtsying between equals. At the funeral she explains to Duke (R), “Well, Angie, I am no longer the wife of a chief of state."

Truly enjoying reading around in—and occasionally arguing in the margins of—@pulpcurry’s new REVOLUTION IN 35mm. A wealth of fascinating history in an eclectic and valuable collection. One of the most relevant, timely, and stimulating cinema books in a while. @PMPressOrg

Here's a mystery. The Vanity Fair article has Cormac McCarthy running off to Mexico in 1977 with a teenage girl. But in a 1974 letter to Hugh Kenner, Guy Davenport mentions that McCarthy had just run off to Mexico with a teenage girl. Did McCarthy do this more than once? Did Vanity Fair get the date wrong?

Re: the Cormac McCarthy story. In 1973 and 1974, McCarthy was editing Guy Davenport's first story collection, Tatlin!, making many severe strictures. Then, McCarthy disappeared. In a 1974 letter to Hugh Kenner, Davenport explained what happened.

Re the Cormac McCarthy Vanity Fair piece… There’s a major red flag early in the piece. Fact check the paperback of THE ORCHARD KEEPER that Augusta Britt says led her to recognize McCarthy from the author photo on the back. Ain’t no author photo on the book. @dan_sinykin

Nov. 20, 1924: It's a remarkable story of love's triumph over war. During WWI a German baron was shot and captured by U.S. soldier Charles Cummings; the wounded POW then fell for a nurse who happened to be Cummings' sister. The lovers are married today in Omaha, Neb. BUT... 1/4
