I've learned that if you want to make fun of sci fi, describe it by adding the word "space" in front of everything. Turn "guns" into "space guns," "villains" into "space villains," etc. It doesn't change really the description, but it makes everything sound that much more silly

So to the extent that Weir means merely that he wants his stories to entertain more than they preach, we can get on board. But to the pretension of keeping all politics/social commentary out of a story--even by implication--we have to throw up a flag. Nice idea; impossible to do.
