15 years ago today, we lost our brother, Lance Corporal Martin "Fish" Gill, killed during a patrol in Adensee, Nahr-e Saraj (South), Helmand province.
Serving with Kilo Company, 42 Commando Royal Marines, Fish was part of a patrol assessing local atmospherics, engaging with residents, and disrupting insurgents for upcoming operations.
An hour into the mission, the patrol was attacked with small-arms fire from a nearby compound. Fish was fatally wounded and, despite immediate first aid, succumbed to his injuries.
Fish joined the Royal Marines in April 2008, passing training in May 2009. He served with the Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines, earning promotion to Lance Corporal within a year and leading a four-man team guarding the UK’s nuclear deterrent.
In September 2010, he joined 42 Commando, where he excelled as Section Second in Command, often stepping up as Section Commander with notable professionalism and enthusiasm.
A passionate and fit individual, Fish swam for his county before enlisting and continued competing for 42 Commando’s team.
Gone but never forgotten. See you at the reorg.
