In the first UK-led operation of its kind, the vessel SMYRTOS was boarded by Royal Marine Commandos and specially trained law enforcement officers from the National Crime Agency, despite Russia’s best efforts to evade sanctions and continue fuelling its war with Ukraine. The military operation, which lasted 6 hours, was supported with aircraft from the Maritime Air Group (Chinooks, Merlin Mk4 and Wildcat), an RAF P-8 aircraft, as well as HMS SUTHERLAND and HMS LEDBURY.

15 years ago today, we lost our brother, Lance Corporal Martin "Fish" Gill, killed during a patrol in Adensee, Nahr-e Saraj (South), Helmand province. Serving with Kilo Company, 42 Commando Royal Marines, Fish was part of a patrol assessing local atmospherics, engaging with residents, and disrupting insurgents for upcoming operations. An hour into the mission, the patrol was attacked with small-arms fire from a nearby compound. Fish was fatally wounded and, despite immediate first aid, succumbed to his injuries. Fish joined the Royal Marines in April 2008, passing training in May 2009. He served with the Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines, earning promotion to Lance Corporal within a year and leading a four-man team guarding the UK’s nuclear deterrent. In September 2010, he joined 42 Commando, where he excelled as Section Second in Command, often stepping up as Section Commander with notable professionalism and enthusiasm. A passionate and fit individual, Fish swam for his county before enlisting and continued competing for 42 Commando’s team. Gone but never forgotten. See you at the reorg.

Remembering Marine Anthony Dean Hotine. Alpha Company, 40 Commando, Royal Marines. On 2 June 2010, 21-year-old Marine Anthony "Tino" Hotine was killed in action in the Sangin District of Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He died while on foot patrol when an explosion struck his unit during operations with Afghan forces. Born in Torquay and living in Warminster, Wiltshire, Marine Hotine served with courage and professionalism in one of the most demanding theatres of the conflict. Sixteen years on, we remember his sacrifice, his smile, and the bright young life given in service to his country. Gone but not forgotten Royal. See you at the reorg.

Routine ground domination patrols to provide security for the locals are conducted every day in Afghanistan. There is nothing extraordinary about these patrols but they are absolutely critical to the success of the mission. The Royal Marines of the 40 Commando, working in Sangin, carry out patrols like these to ensure the provision of security to the area and give the local people confidence in the ISAF mission.

On this day, 16 years ago, 30 May 2010, we remember Marine Scott Gregory Taylor. Marine Taylor of Alpha Company, 40 Commando Royal Marines, aged just 21, from Buxton, Derbyshire, was killed in action in Afghanistan when an explosion struck during a foot patrol near Sangin. A proud Royal Marine who followed his older brother Liam into the Corps, Scott passed for duty in September 2008. He embodied the courage, loyalty, and selflessness that define the Corps. Those who served with him spoke of his high morals, his true friendship, and his dedication to the mission and his mates. Today we pause to honour his sacrifice. We remember the young life taken far too soon, the family who lost a son and brother, the friends who lost a comrade, and the corps that lost one of its own. Lest We Forget.
