In 2010 my daughter Indigo and I got to meet Frank Drake and he toured us around the James Lick Observatory. He even brought sandwiches. He was so kind and that a memory we treasure. He was truly great. x.com/nadiamdrake/status/156…
He was there when I entered this world, and I was there when he left: Frank D Drake, May 28, 1930 - September 2, 2022. Rest among the stars, my sweetest Papa D. You will always be my brightest star. More info here: nadiadrake.com/

Frank gave my oldest daughter and I a tour of the James Lick Observatory in the mid 2000s. He was so nice, such a good teacher, and even brought sandwiches for a then little girl. It still affects us both. The telescopes were neat. Frank was great.

Kid just asked me whether there was a negative zero. I knew this day would come but I wasn't quite ready to have The Talk about IEEE 754 quite yet.

Cleric: Good sir, we heard that your village has befallen a terrible lycantropic curse. Villager: The werewolves did it. They say they can remove it but they're asking for 100 bitecoins. Cleric: Oh, no. Tell me it's not what I think it is. Villager: Yep. Ransomwere. #dnd

Stop making computers that aren’t safe for users and then trying to fix resulting security problems by making the users less human. People make mistakes, people get distracted, people can’t all be experts in forensics. Make it safe to be human on the computers you manage!

The effects of our technical economy basically running on a giant mass of unpaid volunteer labour means a lot of people are going to be quite vulnerable and easy to manipulate given the right incentives. We shouldn't trust software devs to do the right thing.

We don't talk about this enough, but it's entirely true. If I was a malicious foreign power I would just go look through the top npm and Python package maintainers and offer them bribes to install backdoor ransomware installers. Probably has a higher efficacy than cold hacking.
