We are incredibly sad to announce the permanent closure of Broadhursts.
All the booksellers have been made redundant, & the shop will no longer open for trading with immediate effect.

We're aware that some people have been having difficulties contacting the owner via email to get a refund on their shop vouchers. You might have more luck with his business phone number, included on the closure sign he put on the door (07980 948831) π€
ALT A sign on the bookshop window reading "Sorry but we are Closed Until Further Notice This is because of Electrical issues Please see are [sic] website for infomation [sic] or call 07980 948831"
This number, & an email address (harvey@blackberryalpacas.co.uk), are linked to the new owner of Broadhursts via his other business, Blackberry Alpacas, the contact information for which is in the public domain. They also have a presence on Facebook if people want to try there.
I know a lot of people have been wondering why the bookshop has closed so suddenly, so here is some more information from the new owner's wife, originally posted on Facebook, which will hopefully clarify the situation somewhat.
Thanks to everyone for your kind comments about what the shop has meant to you. Us booksellers are devastated by the situation. We can't go into the details of the closure at the moment, but sadly it isn't something we can crowdfund our way out of.

Our bookshop is next to a Chinese restaurant, & right now there is a maddeningly delicious chilli-garlic-sticky smell wafting from their direction. Suddenly my ham & cheese sandwich no longer seems like a satisfying lunch choice!

"All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they really happened & after you are finished reading one you feel that it all happened to you & after which it all belongs to you."

Child's charming pronunciation of 'bookshop' as though it were a place where books could go shopping has filled my mind with images of a magical place where books come to get their ink refreshed, tidy of their shelf-worn edges, maybe splash out on a re-jacketing as a treat...
"There is nothing more magic and beautiful than lines forming across paper. It's all there is. It's all there ever was."

"Writing is finally about one thing: going into a room alone and doing it. Putting words on paper that have never been there in quite that way before."
Author & screenwriter William Goldman, born #OTD 1931. We thank him especially for The Princess Bride!
The wonderful thing about reading is that you can grow up in some rural backwater, far away from the cultural centers, and still acquire a world-class education from your public library. You donβt need to travel; reading opens the world to us.
Someone rang asking to speak to the head of our IT department, as if our 'IT department' is anything more than the person who reboots the modem when it crashes & occasionally gives the printer a kick.
"For a person who grew up in the '30s and '40s in the segregated South, with so many doors closed without explanation to me, libraries and books said, 'Here I am, read me.' Over time I have learned I am at my best around books."
