Gunfighters of the Old West #Thread based on @BryanBurrough's #TheGunfighters in which I plagiarise the caption writer
The Western gunfight evolved after the Civil War from the Southern dueling tradition. The first is considered to be Wild Bill Hickok's killing of Davis Tutt in 1865. Hickok then turned on Tutt's cronies to warn them from responding.

A very great pleasure to have @BryanBurrough back on the pod to discuss his new book, THE GUNFIGHTERS: HOW TEXAS MADE THE WEST WILD, including the psychopathy of some he calls "the big 5." John Wesley Hardin as stone cold killer, anyone? open.substack.com/pub/smokee…

Whatever else you are reading, put @BryanBurrough's “The Gunfighters” at the top of your list to read next. Whether you are drawn to the Old West, to gunfighters, or just well-written non-fiction, “The Gunfighters” deserves your time… and will then grab hold of it. The sub-title, “How Texas Made the West Wild,” seems like a flimsy assertion at first glance… But then the dots those post-Civil War gunfighters (through the end of the 19th Century) had to the Lone Star State start connecting. Burrough’s writing style is engaging, filled with humorous asides that don’t get in the way of his exhaustively researched topic. “The Gunfighters: How Texas Made the West Wild” should be immediately on your summer reading list.

Of all the American archetypes, the Old West Gunfighter looms large in history and culture both here and around the world. My talk with author @BryanBurrough on his rowdy, rollicking, & rip-snorting new book "The Gunfighters: How Texas Made the West Wild." houstonpress.com/arts/things…
