Uh-oh! Japan is rearming again. Like in 1954. And 1960. And 1976. And under Nakasone. And after the Gulf War. And post 9/11. And when they got a new defence ministry. And during reinterpretation. And when the Izumo could carry fixed-wing aircraft. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ nytimes.com/2026/06/14/world…

The Foreign Minister speaks at AIIA conference in Canberra the week after Australia and Indonesia announce new security pact. Wong says Australia is building new regional architecture, striking multiple agreements which weren’t “thinkable” in 2021 (Nauru, Tuvalu, PNG, Indonesia)

After many years of 🥝foreign domination🥝, the Australian Institute of International Affairs is finally led by an Australian! 🇦🇺 And it was great to be seated by chance at the ceremony next to former @AIIANational intern @MinhPhuongVu99, who is also an Australian!

It was a privilege to attend the @yes_ukraine conference in #Kyiv a few days ago. Great to hear from 🇺🇦 Ukrainian and international leaders and commentators. Harrowing to hear stories from the front line. This war needs to end w/ a strong Ukraine that can deter future aggression.

Also wonderful to see a strong Australian contingent, including @latikambourke @billshortenvcuc @lindareynoldswa @mishazelinsky. Great also to catch up in a different venue with Ukrainian friends on this trip, esp @vdovychenkov

🇺🇦 A privilege to be invited to this year's Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv. 🎙️I finally got to IV Kurt Volker for my podcast. It's an awesome chat. And great to see my fav conference pal Bryce Wakefield consistently putting AIIA on the map. 🎧 latika.me/Volker

Wonderful to be in Warsaw 🇵🇱 to chat with officials and experts, among others the good folks at @PISM_Poland.

🤝 It was a very interesting meeting in #PISM on, among others, security in Europe and Indo-Pacific, Russia's war against Ukraine, U.S.-China competition as well as EU and Poland relations with Australia. Thank you @BryceWakefield @AIIANational for a fruitful discussion!

Of course, @EmmanuelMacron rightly points out that France is a resident power, but it is noteworthy that recent statements about new strategic pacts in the Indo-Pacific don't really come from the (Indo-, Asia- or South Pacific bits of the) region itself. theguardian.com/world/2025/m…
