The local election returned incumbent Keith Douglas to the Board of Commissioners for another four term that will run from 2028-2032. Laura English also won reelection to the Board of Education and newcomer Arnita Watson joins her. Others running were unopposed. Natalie Fears Sundeen was defeated in her bid for Towaliga Circuit Judge by District Attorney Jonathan Adams. There were uploading issues last night that caused long delays but overall the Elections Office staff handled the entire daylong elections process professionally and expertly. This was from the first results tape. #GeorgiaPrimary #gapol #elections

Today community leaders, elected officials and private citizens are at work on the 5-year 2027 Comprehensive Plan, focusing on areas such as strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT), economic development and community demographics. The input from this group and later, public input sessions will guide and shape the plan that will help chart the course for our community into the 2030’s. #ButtsCounty

As we head into the upcoming weekend, a few important things to note for our area:  Dangerous wind chill temperatures are expected for all of north and central Georgia on Saturday and Sunday. The NWS has HIGH confidence in dangerous wind chill temperatures and LOW confidence in snow accumulations. Cold is our biggest concern right now because we will have an extended period of time where the temperature will not get above freezing (more than 48 hours). The main issue with that is the increased chance of pipes bursting. Three years ago, excessive pipes bursting in sub-freezing temperatures resulted in both cities and counties experiencing water system failures due to pressure loss. We're advising people now to take steps to ensure their pipes are protected, especially those with unoccupied weekend homes at Jackson Lake, which was a significant point of pipe failure the last time. Wind chills will also be a problem for those who have to work out in the field. The graphic below shows what the wind chills are anticipated to be over the next few days. I use Griffin as a reference being closest to it. Our EMA will continue to monitor and push out information on our main social media channels as needed. Stay warm and safe!

SNOW NEXT WEEKEND? It's still possible, but looking less likely. Out of the last 8 run of our two long-range models, 3 have light snow Saturday morning across East Georgia. If this system shifts west, it will certainly be cold enough for snow (highs in the 30s, lows in the teens). We'll watch it closely through the week.

This will mark the first activation of our new Emergency Operations Center. Within the next hour, the center will be fully staffed with representatives from our public safety and public works teams, along with our municipal partners and local utilities. By repurposing this downtown space, we are able to bring everyone together in one place, allowing for clear communication and coordinated decision-making should ice accumulation or related impacts occur. The EOC is directly connected to the State Operations Center and provides real-time weather updates and GDOT information, ensuring our field units receive timely, accurate guidance. Through this close coordination with local and state partners, our focus is on delivering an efficient, well-organized response to whatever conditions may develop. The Emergency Operations Center will remain operational throughout the duration of the event. Please stay safe, and plan to be home before weather conditions deteriorate.
