Kurtz is one of the most exciting young players in the game. He's an on-base machine with elite pop. Could be a legit superstar for a long time.

The Braves may need to get three starters at the deadline. I don't think they're willing to go with all of Didier Fuentes, J.R. Ritchie and Hurston Waldrep in the rotation, and they can't bank on Spencer Schwellenbach contributing much this season. It's getting bleak in a hurry.

-Fuentes: great stuff, still young, eventual rotation mainstay (but maybe not this year) -Waldrep: good potential, but coming off surgery; no guarantees -Ritchie: good potential, needs more experience -AJSS: coming off TJ surgery; even less of a guarantee than Waldrep -Schwellenbach: Hasn't pitched in a full year, no idea when he'll be back or what he'll be able to do So, yes, they need multiple starters unless they're willing to gamble on the internal options being good/great right away.

And don't misunderstand or freak out, Braves fans. When I said it's getting bleak in a hurry, I was referring only to the rotation.

Beyond losing the stuff and results, Spencer Strider has also lost his vibe, swagger, whatever you want to call it. He's just not the same presence.

Stillwell hit a homer in the first MLB game I attended.

That’s almost exactly where Jose Canseco hit one in 1989.

Nerd review: I just listened to John Williams' score to "Disclosure Day." It's a strong album with some interesting passages. The theme -- yes, there's a hummable theme! -- sounds like a mashup of "Cinque's Theme" from "Amistad" and "Star of Bethlehem" from "Home Alone 2." But it works. Overall, a solid B score. There's a chance this is the last new Williams score we'll ever get. If so, it's a good farewell. He's 94 and still able to write compelling music. That's amazing on its own. I'd love to be that talented and in-demand when I'm 94.

The Spurs know how to TAKE the lead, they just don't know how to HOLD the lead. And that's really the most important part of the lead: the holding

He's going to the Hall of Fame anyway, but he's got a solid chance to reach 3,000.
Freddie! Freddie! Freddie! Congratulations Freddie on 2,500 career hits!

You could argue that Dom Smith, Mauricio Dubón, Mike Yastrzemski and Jorge Mateo are collectively in the top two or three reasons why the Braves have been so good in 2026. I wrote about how they've given Atlanta its deepest bench in years. Tell a friend. mlb.com/news/braves-deep-ben…

As has been noted, this hasn't mattered for Atlanta. But it's kinda funny that the team with the best record in baseball has essentially been playing with just eight hitters since Drake Baldwin went down. Like the pre-DH days.

On this day in 1985, high school senior Ferris Bueller skipped school and, among other things, ate pancreas, successfully posed as the Sausage King of Chicago, caught a foul ball at a Cubs game and crushed it as a parade float performer. A first-ballot Hall of Fame day.

Since Acuña's big weekend, he's hitting .182. Package him and Sale for prospects and start the rebuild.
The 42-20 Braves are going to lose this one tonight so strap in for the worst takes you’ve ever seen for the next 45 minutes. I’m ready for someone to suggest trading Chris Sale
