In 1996, while promoting The Funeral, director Abel Ferrara gave an off‑the‑rails interview with Conan O’Brien that's gone down as one of the most outrageous moments in the show’s history. Conan later said it was like “talking to a wild animal.”
Unbeknownst to Conan, just before Abel was supposed to come on, he suffered a panic attack and fled the studio. Fortunately, a producer chased him out onto the street and dragged him back just in time for his appearance.
It’s unclear whether Abel was drunk or high (or both) during this segment, but he's since been very open about his substance abuse issues during this period of his career.
