The @WA_Mainstream cascade conference is off to a great start! Kicked it off with a panel discussing the income tax litigation and other @CADFWashington cases with @stevemgordon67 and Patti Mann and then proceeded to a trivia contest against @robmckenna and Sam Reed where @ErikSmithWa and Burman and I narrowly placed third. Today, the Court ruled that the plaintiffs in our parental rights lawsuit have standing to challenge HB 1296 - an important recognition that Washington parents and school officials have every right to raise these constitutional concerns.
While we are disappointed in the ruling on the merits, this fight is far from over.
We are reviewing the decision with counsel and exploring all available legal options moving forward.
Parents do not lose their constitutional rights at the school door, and we remain committed to defending transparency, accountability, and the rights of Washington families.

Washington AG Nick Brown is responding for the first time after The Center Square obtained nearly 1,000 pages of internal income tax documents.
Brown pushed back on claims his office advised lawmakers on how to bypass voters or the state constitution.
According to Brown, his office was simply explaining existing law and court precedent, something AGs regularly do.
When asked about emails referencing referendums, Brown said they reflected how revenue laws are treated under current law, not an effort to avoid voter input.
His comments add a new layer to the growing debate over Washington’s income tax and the role of the AG’s office.

First, Ecology leadership would not have released the report without our pressure. Their original plan was to release it at the end of 2026 – four years after the end of 2022.
Our lawsuits with legislators and led by @cadfwashington, forced this transparency.
Just last month, Ecology was spending taxpayer money saying they couldn’t release this exact data even after we offered it as a settlement. 😑 2/x

Emails obtained by The Center Square show that some lawmakers and AG staff discussed using the law to force the state Supreme Court to reconsider a nearly 100-year-old ruling that blocks a broader income tax.
That ruling defines income as property, limiting how it can be taxed.
If overturned, it could pave the way for a progressive income tax on all Washingtonians, not just millionaires.
The 9.9% tax is already facing legal challenges ahead of its planned 2028 rollout.

It's official!
The first lawsuit has been filed against the State of Washington for implementing an unconstitutional income tax, SB 6346.
"The lawsuit is brought on behalf of individual taxpayers, farmers, and leading business organizations that represent thousands of small businesses across the state – all of whom have come together to ask the Court to uphold the State Constitution"
With a former Attorney General, a former Supreme Court Justice, and a law firm that specializes in representing Washingtonians against Olympia all spearheading the fight;
This lawsuit is going to be one for the history books.
