2021 has also seen the repatriation of Iraqi artefacts, including the 3,500-year old tablet telling part of the Epic of Gilgamesh, which was looted during the 1991 Gulf War and held in the US. Over 17,000 other artefacts have been returned to Iraq this year.

After months of renovation work, Baghdad’s famous Al-Mutanabbi Street — known for being the city’s cultural heart with its book stalls and cafes — was reopened on 25 December. This is part of a mayoral initiative to restore dozens of landmarks in the capital.
