Working on a Heisman longshots story for
@CBSSports and here's why I think
#Gamecocks QB LaNorris Sellers is worth a closer look at 40/1 ...
Sellers deserves a long look following the Gamecocks' offseason coaching staff overhaul offensively and reinforcements that were signed at the line of scrimmage to protect their quarterback. Think of it like this โ you're getting a former 2024 Heisman contender from the SEC's top-tier of talent at the position at a heavily-discounted rate.
The physical tools have never been in question. At 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, Sellers is one of the SEC's most imposing dual-threat quarterbacks and already has nearly 5,000 passing yards and close to 1,000 rushing yards during his career in Columbia. What makes this season different, however, is the infrastructure around him and a system catering to his specific skill set.
South Carolina made one of the offseason's most intriguing hires by bringing in offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, a play-caller with a lengthy track record of producing explosive offenses and maximizing quarterback talent. Briles has already indicated the Gamecocks' scheme will be tailored around Sellers' strengths rather than forcing him into a rigid system, which should unlock more downfield opportunities and designed quarterback runs.
Just as important, the Gamecocks invested to fix an alarming weakness โ inconsistency along the offensive front. South Carolina's offensive line struggled mightily in 2025, allowing one of the nation's highest sack rates, but Shane Beamer responded with a massive overhaul that included new offensive line coach Randy Clements and a wave of experienced transfer additions. Several veteran linemen arrive with extensive starting experience, giving South Carolina a much better chance to protect Sellers and establish offensive balance.
Heisman campaigns often come down to timing and team success. Sellers already has the name recognition and NFL Draft buzz. If Briles' offense takes off and South Carolina becomes a surprise contender in the SEC, Sellers could pile up the kind of production voters notice nationally. The favorites command headlines early, but don't be surprised if Sellers is firmly in the Heisman conversation by October if South Carolina takes advantage of a favorable slate early.
